Nottinghamshire-based Irish star Billy Twomey and Royale Du Rouet triumphed in the Suregrow Five Fence Challenge claiming their first win at the Horse of the Year Show. The winning duo achieved the only clear over the massive course.
Billy, who rode for Ireland at the London 2012 Olympics and is among the most consistent performers in World show jumping, celebrated with the promising nine-year-old stallion Royale Du Rouet.
The Five Fence Challenge sees competitors jump a course of five fences, which increase in height in each round. There are a maximum of five rounds, with riders gaining two points for each fence jumped and one point taken away if they knock it down. Should they accure a fault, then combinations are eliminated.
Three riders made it through to the fourth round but Cian O’Connor (Billy's Irish London 2012 colleague) with Ulme De Feugeres and Graham Lovegrove with Centolove both had one down leaving Billy to win with a clear.
The nine year old stallion was astounding and didn't put a foot wrong giving the pair the maximum number of points to win the class.
“He’s got lots of ability and is super careful – he doesn't want to touch the fences,” Billy told H&C. “This class suited him as he grew in confidence with each round. I was really pleased with him."
