Caroline Powell is probably best known for her long term association with crowd favourite Lenamore with whom she won team bronze at London 2012 Olympics. The gutsy little grey won Burghley with Caroline in 2010 and they certainly had a unique partnership. Quirky, tricky and with a mind of his own Lenamore met his match with Caroline and they brought a combination of trust and flair to the cross country and made two appearances for Team New Zealand at Olympic level and enjoyed much success including 7 Badmintons and 5 Burghleys. Testament to Caroline’s long term care Lenamore was still out at 20 years old enjoying himself in the 2013 Hickstead Eventers Derby looking as feisty as ever.
Dig back a little further and you find out just why Caroline formed such a partnership with Lenamore. Arriving in the UK from New Zealand she started off riding in a Point to Point yard and decided after a fair few runs and a few falls it was not going to be a long term plan, although there was an eventer there called Calibre who was to give Caroline her first taste of International competition. She then moved to Ian Stark’s yard in Scotland as a groom, which took her to Atlanta Olympics with Stanwick Ghost before she set up her own base in Kelso from which she operated at the top level of the sport until the end of 2012.
Now based in Suffolk, there is a formidable string behind her as her young horses are moving swiftly up the levels and the 2016 season looks like an exciting one.
With more than 25 Badminton, Burghley, Luhmühlen and Pau completions under her belt along with 2 World Games and 2 Olympics for Team New Zealand there is no sign of Caroline slowing down and she brings a wealth of experience to her team. Caroline says “I get as much satisfaction from bringing on young event horses as I do riding at 4 star” which explains why nearly all of her team horses have been produced from the beginning of their careers.
